Our Barbershop Society - Explained in simple terms.
Society for the Preservation and Encouragement
of Barber Shop Quartet Singing In America
(our longer, hard to remember, more historic and current legal name)
BHS - Barbershop Harmony
Society
(our shorter and simple brand name)
Organization Purpose
The Dukes of Harmony are a barbershop chorus of 40 men, of which 25 are in the performing chorus. Started in 1954,
the Dukes have had a proud tradition of excellence in competing at the Ontario and international level as well as providing
some of the best shows around. The Dukes have a rich history including two international gold medals (Canada's first!).
The Chorus performs publicly throughout the year, usually in the evenings or on weekends. Engagements include barbershop
shows, commercial bookings and specialty events. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the West Rouge Community Centre at 7:30pm
in Scarborough.
The Dukes love to compete and entertain audiences. As our Music Director says “you
don’t have to have special skills or read music. All you need is a love for music and a love for singing. All the rest
is just details“.
Mission Statement
Excellence - Harmony - Friendship
The long range mission
of the Scarborough chapter is to:
I) Foster fellowship and to enjoy the camaraderie of all
male barbershop singing and the intricacies of 4-part a capella close harmony through rehearsal, performance and competition;
II) Develop the talents of the chorus members, both individually and collectively, and
to continue to be a vital chapter in the activities of the Ontario District of the Barbershop Harmony Society.
III)
Create a hybrid fun and learning environment designed to grow our membership while striving to achieve excellence in singing
and performances through a constant improvement process supported by a variety of learning tools.
